Capturing Personalities with Portrait Photography

When a professional photographer is trying to capture the personality of a person or group of people, it is called portrait photography. This type of photography has been around since the invention of the camera, when portraits of people were taken as a way to preserve history. Since then, portrait photography has made many advances. It used to take several hours just to take one picture. Oftentimes, the subject of the photograph wasn’t even smiling. Nowadays, many pictures can be taken in just mere minutes while capturing several facial expressions.

Photographers use several techniques for capturing their subject’s personality including backdrops, effective lighting, and a variety of poses. It sometimes also involves changes in setting and wardrobe changes for the person or group of people being photographed.
